Question

What is a pear-shaped diamond?

The pear-shaped diamond with a rounded face of 58 facets placed in a brilliant cut pattern is a stunning representation of your love, joy and devotion. Combining round marquise and round brilliant cuts to form a tapered teardrop symbolic of a tear of joy, the perfectly proportioned design gives the finger a slender, elongated appearance. A pear shape diamond is a distinctive, versatile, eye-catching, and captivating alternative to a traditional round shape due to its remarkable display of opulence, style and uniqueness.

What length-to-width ratio is best for a pear-shaped diamond engagement ring?

The ideal length-to-width ratio (l/w) for a pear-shaped diamond is down to personal preference. However, we recommend you choose a pear-shaped LTW ratio of 1.45-1.50:1 and 1.75:1 to avoid odd, narrow proportions. The pear-shaped diamond comes in a variety of cuts- slim to wide. To ensure beautifully soft curves, ideally, a pear-shaped diamond should possess a Symmetry grade of Excellent (EX) or Very Good (VG) symmetry, and the point should line up with the apex of the rounded end. In addition, you should take into account the pear-diamond girdle.

Finding a perfectly well-cut, symmetrical pear-shaped diamond is difficult and rare. However, symmetry is an integral part of a pear-shaped diamond; a diamond grade report can assess the size, angles and alignment of your pear-shaped diamond.

While pear-cut diamonds do not have an official cut grade, generally, the style and overall look you wish to achieve determine the ratio, depth and girdle. For example, a higher ratio will achieve a narrow, elongated pear shape perfect for a vintage, art deco or antique look. A wider and rounded pear shape is achieved with a lower ratio, perfect for a modern ring and a halo or double halo setting.

The ratio is as follows;

For an Excellent (EX) pear diamond symmetry, choose a 58-62 depth and a 1.45-1.55 L/W ratio, resulting in a very thin to slightly thick girdle. For a Very Good (VG) pear-shaped diamond symmetry, choose a 56-57.9 or 62.1-66 depth % and a 1.40-1.44 or 1.56-1.65 length-to-width ratio (LW) that also results in a very thin-slightly thick girdle.

The girdle will influence the diamond’s overall look and shape, which suit styles, settings and hand profiles differently. Although a pear-cut diamond can make the wearers’ fingers appear slimmer and longer, we recommend that you compare and try on these different pear-shaped diamonds to see which you prefer and what compliments your hand profile.

How do you make a pear diamond look bigger?

To make a pear diamond look bigger, go slim with your setting and select a slim band and slim prongs. You can make any centre diamond look more prominent and bring attention to it with a slim, delicate setting, slim band, and prongs. For a more delicate look, choose a wide band with larger prongs.

A bezel setting is generally used for a pear-shaped or oval diamond to make the ring look more prominent, and the surrounding metal adds extra protection for the delicate shape that can chip or snag.

A halo setting is also popular for a pear-shaped diamond featuring a beautiful, brilliant pear-shaped centre diamond surrounded by a stunning collection of sparkling pave diamonds, creating the illusion of a bigger stone and enhancing its brilliance.

Four-prong mountings are better than six-prong in making a pear-shaped diamond look larger since more of the gemstone surface is covered with metal.

Some settings, such as a raised or higher setting, may make the ring appear more prominent due to the delicacy of a pear diamond. However, a setting where it is secure is more important than making the diamond appear larger. Pear-shaped diamonds already look larger compared to other diamond shapes due to their elongated face.

Do all pear diamonds have a bow tie effect?

Yes, pear-shaped diamonds always have the “bow-tie” effect, which is the consequence of the diamond’s cut that prevents the light from entering the centre of the diamond, resulting in a darkened area in the shape of a bow-tie. However, you can avoid the appearance of a bow tie by getting your pear-shaped diamond expertly cut so that the darkness is minimally visible to the eye. You can also pick the ultimate colour grade that can disguise the bow tie and opt for a coloured pear-shaped diamond.

Which Colour Grade Is the Best For Pear Shape Diamond Ring?

For a pear-shaped diamond ring closer to true white, you may wish to consider a higher colour grade because the pear shape amplifies the colour of a stone. We recommend you go a colour grade one higher for a pear-shaped diamond to get the same outcome as a round-shaped diamond. The colour grade choice for a pear diamond depends on your preference; for a warmer tone, we recommend colour grades G-H or for those that prefer an ice-cool tone, opt for colour grades D-F. We recommend an H colour grade or above for a more even tone.

Alternatively, you can choose a fancy colour pear-shaped diamond, such as a yellow diamond, as the pear shape will amplify the colour for a spectacular display of opulence, vibrancy, and vivacity.

A pear shape intensifies a colour within a stone; for a whiter pear-shaped diamond, we recommend a colour grade of H or higher, particularly for a platinum or white-like metal setting.

What clarity grade is the best for a pear-cut diamond?

For a clean pear-shaped diamond to the naked eye, we recommend a clarity of SI1 or better. Like colour grade and carat choice, clarity depends on personal preference and what is important or less important to you. However, your carat very often determines your clarity scale since clarity grades are calculated relative to the size of a diamond. For example, if you opt for a 1-carat to 2-carat pear-shaped diamond and above, it is a good idea to opt for higher clarity, such as VS1 or VS2 and for excellent clarity, FL-VVS2 is your best bet. For 0.51-1 carat, VS2 – SI1 will provide you with very good clarity but for excellent clarity, opt for FL-VS1.

What is the best setting for a pear engagement ring?

Prong settings (either 5 or 6 prongs) are popular for a pear-shaped diamond engagement ring. Although it depends on your desires for your diamond, whether you want it to look bigger, understated, classic, modern, vintage, art deco, warmer, cooler or more brilliant. The choice depends on personal preference.

Four-prong mountings are better than six-prong in making a pear-shaped diamond look larger since more of the gemstone surface is covered with metal.

You should always consider your taste, lifestyle and budget when choosing and designing a pear-shaped ring. It is important to note that although some settings, such as a raised or higher setting, may make the ring appear more prominent due to the delicacy of a pear diamond, a secure setting is more important than making the diamond appear larger. Pear-shaped diamonds already look larger compared to other diamond shapes due to their elongated face.

To make a pear diamond look bigger, go slim with your setting and select a slim band and slim prongs. Likewise, you can make any centre diamond look bigger and bring attention to it with a slim, delicate setting, slim band, and prongs. For a more delicate look, choose a wide band with larger prongs.

A bezel setting is generally used for a pear-shaped or oval diamond to make the ring look larger, and the surrounding metal adds extra protection for the delicate shape that can chip or snag.

A halo setting is also popular for a pear-shaped diamond featuring a beautiful, brilliant pear-shaped centre diamond surrounded by a stunning collection of sparkling pave diamonds, creating the illusion of a bigger stone and enhancing its brilliance.

How many facets are in a pear-cut diamond?

58 Facets. A typical pear-cut diamond with a ratio between 1.50 – 1.70 is usually comprised of 58 facets, with the pavilion facets ranging from 4 – 8. Pear shapes also sometimes have a ‘French tip’ cut that replaces the large bezel facet with star and upper girdle facets.
