Questions

What to look for when buying a Round diamond?

There are many things to look for when buying a round diamond to maximise the cut, carat, colour and clarity, such as; depth percentage, table size, crown angles, pavilion angles, lower girdles, star facets and the polish/symmetry.

There are a few things to keep in mind when buying a round diamond, but the cut grade is the most crucial factor to consider when choosing a round-cut diamond. The cut and cut grade determines a round-cut diamond’s shine, fire and brilliance. GIA cut grades are exclusively given to round-cut diamonds. However, it is essential to note that there are many variations, even within the GIA’s excellent round-cut diamond grades. Therefore, we recommend selecting very good- excellent round-cut diamonds for the greatest shine, brilliance and fire.

The cut of a round-cut diamond is more important than a carat. The rough-cut diamond carat is almost hard to tell the difference between, and you can find a considerably cheaper carat for nearly the same size and radiance. Therefore, we recommend considering a less popular round diamond carat, such as a 0.9 carat. The brilliance of a round-cut diamond also means you can look for and compromise on clarity and colour when buying a round-cut diamond. The metal setting will be a significant factor when considering a coloured round diamond. Therefore, you should look to match your metal setting with the colour of your round-cut diamond. For example, J or I colour round cut diamonds look great in white gold, and K colour is an excellent consideration with a rose gold or yellow band.

What Is a Round-Cut Diamond?

Round-cut diamonds were the first diamond developed by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. Widely held as an exceptionally radiant diamond, the classic, symmetrical shape consists of 58 facets showcasing uniform ideal proportions of 100% diameter, 53% table, 43.1% pavilion and 16.2% crown. A round-cut diamond is undeniably the most iconic and popular, with a traditional and elegant shape for wedding rings, engagement rings, diamond rings, and many other types of diamond jewellery. Classic round-cut gemstones are exceptionally radiant diamonds that radiate timeless beauty. Synonymous with elegance, simplicity and everlasting character with their symmetrical, clean design, excellent dispersion of slight cuts and faceting pattern. Round- diamonds are not as deep as other gemstone cuts, but their perfectly cut edges showcase and enhance the diamond making it look bigger and more brilliant. This iconic, timeless diamond is a sure choice for new and old brides alike and is perfect for a classic look.

Why are Round-cut diamonds so popular?

Round-cut diamonds are so popular because they accentuate beauty and brilliance, shining from all angles due to their 58 facets reflecting light and enhancing the diamond’s size, giving optimum sparkle and scintillation. A round-cut diamond’s clean, classic and adaptable shape is a perfect match for wedding rings, engagement rings, diamond rings, and many other types of diamond jewellery and can be displayed in many settings or styles. The round cut is a beautiful choice as a stand-alone in a solitaire setting or perfect complimentary to a three-stone setting.

Reflected by its overwhelming flexibility, a round-cut diamond has retained in popularity throughout the years, admired by new and old brides looking for the perfect classic look or a diamond that can hold its own in a modern setting. Unmatched and outshining the rest, round-cut diamonds are the perfect way to showcase the light of your commitment and love.

What setting style should I choose for a Round-cut diamond?

The best setting style you should consider for a round-cut diamond ring is the four-prong setting or classic round solitaire. The simply elegant solitaire setting allows the round-cut diamond to shine, allowing the most light to travel through the stone, giving optimum sparkle and scintillation.

Choose a bezel setting to make a round-cut diamond look more prominent, as the surrounding diamond girdle matches the circumference of the round-cut diamond, enhancing it and making it appear larger. In addition, a Bezel setting with a minimum 4-prong setting affords extra protection. For a rounder appearance, we recommend you use a five or six-prong setting and for a square round-cut diamond appearance, choose a four-prong setting.

What colour grade should I choose for a Round-cut diamond?

The colour grade and the best colour for round-cut diamonds begin with D and end with Z. For a colourless round-cut diamond, colour grades D, E and F are recommended for more warmth and depth, G-Z. As the 58-facet cuts refract light and enhance the size of the round cut diamond better than other cuts and shapes, you can drop to I or J and get a great value diamond with an SI1 or S12 clarity as long as the diamond still remains eye-clean, you should not focus on the clarity of a round diamond as much as you should consider the cut.

The metal setting will be a significant factor when considering a coloured round diamond. You should look to match your metal setting with the colour of your round-cut diamond. For example, J or I colour round cut diamonds look great in white gold, and K colour is a great consideration with a rose gold or yellow band.

What clarity is best for a Round diamond?

The best clarity grade for a round-cut diamond is VS2 or SI1 for under 1 carat. For 1 carat and over, VS1 or VS2 is the best for an eye-clean stone.

A VS1 round-cut diamond has slightly fewer and smaller inclusions than a VS2 round-cut diamond, although clarity is the least important of the four C’s in a round-cut diamond. An SI1 clarity on a round cut often doesn’t have visible inclusions and is almost hard to tell the difference between, and yet you can find considerably cheaper round cuts with lower clarity and carat at virtually the same size and radiance. Therefore, we recommend considering a less popular round diamond carat, such as a 0.9 carat with a lower clarity grade.

Is the cut or carat size more important to consider when selecting a Round-cut diamond?

The cut is more important than the carat size to consider when selecting a round-cut diamond. In fact, the cut of a round-cut diamond is the most important of the 4Cs of diamond quality. For a round-cut diamond, you can settle for a lower clarity or colour, but the accuracy of the cuts is crucial for symmetry and the overall delicacy of how light travels through the 58 facets and how that light is refracted, therefore altering brilliance, sparkle and scintillation. .
