Buying an engagement ring is a daunting task. With all factors to consider, like colour, cut and clarity, choosing the right one for your partner can be confusing. But the first thing that might come into your mind is the carat.
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, and one carat is equal to 0.2 grams. While it is not the most important factor to consider, having a specific weight in mind can lead you to your final decision.
The average size of diamonds in engagement rings in Australia
The average size of a diamond in engagement rings in Australia is 1.0 carat, and the most frequently bought carat sizes in 2023 are 0.5, 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5. Many consider a one-carat diamond ring or solitaire engagement rings as a classic choice.
But remember, the best carat size to purchase depends on your finger size and what compliments your finger profile. The smaller the finger, the larger the diamond will appear; therefore, you may wish to choose a smaller style that compliments a smaller hand and fingers. Selecting a ring style with the finger size in mind will help ensure comfort, balance and suitability. If you are adamant about buying a larger carat than the most desired 1-carat diamond, consider fancy shapes apart from the classic round shape.
Pear and marquise-shaped diamonds make the ring carat appear more prominent than other shapes at the same carat weight.
One trick to buying a larger stone for less is going just below the average 1-carat size. Diamond prices go up for every 0.5 carats. So if you want to meet the average but are slightly short on budget, opt for a 0.9 carat, and nobody will be able to tell the difference.

Does size matter?
While size is an important consideration, there are still other major factors at play, often called the 4 C’s: cut, colour, clarity and carat. These 4 C’s determine the cost of a diamond.
Cut determines how brilliant the stone will be. An ideally cut diamond can be so sparkly that it hides the imperfections of the gemstone. This means you can save a few bucks in colour and clarity.
Remember that the cut is more important than the carat weight. A 0.9 carat ideally cut diamond will look better and significantly cost less than a full carat, poorly cut diamond. Not only that, but both diamonds will have around the same surface area.
As Australians prefer quality over the size of the diamond, it is essential to go over these factors before making your decision.
