Buying an engagement ring is a daunting task. With all factors to consider, like colour, cut and clarity, choosing the right one for your partner can be confusing. But the first thing that might come into your mind is the carat.
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, and one carat is equal to 0.2 grams. While it is not the most important factor to consider, having a specific weight in mind can lead you to your final decision.
Average size of diamonds in engagement rings in Australia
In Australia, the one-carat diamond is easily the most frequently requested size. Many consider a one-carat diamond solitaire engagement ring as a classic choice.
One trick into buying a larger stone for less is by going just below that size. Diamond prices go up for every 0.5 carat. So if you want to meet the average but is slightly short on budget, opt for a 0.9 carat and nobody will be able to tell the difference.
But if you really want to buy a ring with a big jewel, consider fancy shapes apart from the classic round. Pear and marquise-shaped diamonds appear the largest compared to other shapes at the weight. The width of the finger will also matter.

Does size matter?
While size is an important consideration, there are still other major factors at play, often called the 4 C’s: cut, colour, clarity and carat. These 4 C’s determine the cost of a diamond.
Cut determines how brilliant the stone will be. An ideally cut diamond can be so sparkly that it hides the imperfections of the gemstone. This means you can save a few bucks in colour and clarity.
Remember that the cut is more important than the carat weight. A 0.9 carat ideally cut diamond will look better and significantly cost less than a full carat, poorly cut diamond. Not only that, but both diamonds will have around the same surface area.
As Australians prefer quality over the size of the diamond, it is essential to go over these factors before making your decision.
